Skyscraper (Movie Review)

img_0009-1I’ll watch anything with Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) in it. However dumb it may be. Skyscraper was one of them. There are serious plot holes though the filming and cinematography is excellent. Will Sawyer (The Rock) has a backstory where he makes a wrong decision not to shoot a suicide bomber and suffers his leg being blown off. But he marries his surgeon soon after and has a wonderful happy family.

Sawyer is looking for a job and goes to Hong Kong. He’s tasked to check the security of a new mega skyscraper before they let residents stay. However, things turn bad really fast when Sawyer’s former Seal buddy frames him for setting the building on fire and turning off the fire safety system. Apparently, his buddy was medically discharged after the horrific suicide incident but he seems perfectly fine to me. He even works for Zhao, the billionaire owner of the building. But he pins all the blame on Sawyer. He gets what he deserves after he loses in a fight with a paralytic Sawyer.

Sawyer fights off baddies, gets tasered but manages to run off. Is that even possible? He realises his family is trapped in the building and proceeds to climb the scaffold of a crane about 100 stories in height. His arm is injured, he has a prosthetic leg but it doesn’t matter. He scales it and the police get wind of the fugitive. A helicopter tries to capture him but the heat from the fire makes it unsafe. But the intense heat will not deter Sawyer as he leaps from the crane and catches on to a ledge with his bare hands. That’s pretty ridiculous.

Sawyer manages to find his wife (who kicked the ass of a baddie). Then comes a crazy scene where his wife walks over a plank instead of her Son crossing it alone. Meanwhile Sawyer is apparently holding some cables so the bridge won’t collapse! His strength is unfathomable.

Sawyer goes in search of his Daughter and gets caught. The baddie forces him to open the door to access Zhao and his thumb drive (I forgot what it was for after awhile). No baddie stayed with him as he opened the door after much difficulty. Otherwise they might have got Zhao too early! They work up a plan and fight off Botha and all his goons. But the fire is threatening to kill all of them.

Thankfully, Sawyer’s wife found the tablet to reactivate the fire system (even though an expert hacker claimed that no one would be able to crack it). She’s a surgeon not a computer expert but she figured out a simple reboot would do the trick. Sawyer’s leg injury was the best thing that led to finding a good wife. The family is saved, no thanks to the useless police force and Sawyer is one man army. Cool effects but dummified by the plot.

So Bad it’s Good rating: 4/5
